Message from the desk of the chairman.
Dear brothers and sisters,

Dr. P. Sundarraj
Chairman

Expression of Gratitude

At the outset, may I express my humble namaskarams to each and everyone of you for assigning this prestigious position  as “CHAIRMAN” of TNASI.
Let me assure you that I will follow  the noble footsteps of legends of surgery who headed this great academic body and lead the organisation with great ethics and dedication to the humanity.
May I dedicate myself in upholding the principles of our TNASI and serving the scientific body at all times.

Academic Activities of ASI

I am here for the welfare of young surgeons updating them with the advances in the field of Surgery. We have excellent academic programmes for the benefit of surgical postgraduates and scientific programmes for updating the  skills of  young surgeons and the practising surgeons with wide experience.  Academic programmes are prepared by excellent team of executive committee and academic council. We are guided by the experience of galaxy of  senior surgeons in this regard. We also have a social welfare council with primary objective of the benefit of poor and downtrodden masses of the society.
I am receptive to the ideas of fellow surgeons towards the moral values of the science of surgery for the welfare of the organisation.

Safety of the Patient and Safety of the Surgeon

Our prime aim in streamlining the healthcare delivery is the “safety of the patient”. We strive hard to  achieve this motto with our updated knowledge and skill which we deliver to the patient irrespective of caste , colour and creed. At the same time, we often note that our surgeons are put to lot of hardships and  are subjected to various forms of  litigations. This necessitates that we had to concentrate on the “safety of surgeon”  in his surgical practice. We always follow ethics in our practice. In spite of our honesty we face lot of litigations. It is all due to misconceptions by the patient. This results in undue harassment doubting our genuinity resulting in litigations.
Litigations are due to poor understanding of the disease, severity of the disease and final outcome of the treatment by the society.

Steps for Surgical Practices

  1. We should sit and discuss with the patient. We should sensitize the patient and relatives about the probable outcome of the treatment. They should be made to understand that we offer the best treatment but the outcome is not in our hands.
  2. At the same time, we should not take everything granted. Surgeons should be sensitized about the importance of documentation detailing the discussion with the patient and relatives.
  3. In the current era of knowledge explosion  the social media should be sensitized about these issues so that there is no misinterpretation and propagation of  false and unauthenticated  information in the media. We should have cordial relationship with media.
  4. Scientific body like ASI should have the CONSTITUTIONAL SUPPORT. We should make all attempts to bring the change in the constitution. Like the quota in Rajya sabha for eminent personalities, our scientific body should have representation in legislative councils and Rajya sabha. This will help in making our voice heard loud in state assemblies  and parliment.

Association of India With Advisory Role in Constitutional and Administrative Bodies

The constitutional and administrative bodies often pass various draconian directives which hamper our surgical practice. They do not understand the ground realities and gravity of problems and pass the directives and decisions arrived unilaterally.  Our real voices of  dissent and unheard.  If we have an advisory role in these constitutional and administrative bodies,  Association of India  can give appropriate constructive suggestions before enactment of law. To cite a few, GST counsil, Pollution control board, electricity board, local bodies like corporation, judiciary etc often pass various laws and directives which are not conducive  in day to day  practice.

Surgeon as the Leader of the Team

My prime aim is in Upholding the dignity of the surgeon as the “leader of the team” in our dedication to the welfare of the patient.
We should strive hard to restore the glory of surgeon and he should be regarded with prime role in management of the patient.

Long live TN ASI!
