Dr. B. M. Sundaravadanan – Best Teacher Award


Dr. B. M. Sundaravadanan was born on 5th December 1900.He graduated from Central College, Bangalore and then qualified his B.A. Natural Science from the Madras Christian College. He then joined the Madras Medical College and passed his MBBS in April 1926.He then set sail to London and spent four years in surgical training at the Guys Hospital and Kings College Hospital in London. He passed his F.R.C.S. England in 1931.He then visited Vienna before returning to India. In 1934 he was appointed as Honorary Surgeon of the Government Royapettah Hospital. The hospital at that time was manned entirely by Honoraries. In 1935 Dr. B. M. Sundaravadanam was appointed as Honorary Surgeon in Government General Hospital and had a separate surgical unit. He was the first to be appointed as Honorary Surgeon in Government General Hospital.

He was very much interested in teaching and took regular bedside clinics. He was known for his meticulous dress, punctuality and for his demonstration of clinical signs. He worked as Honorary Surgeon till the year 1949 when he gave up his post and moved to private practice. He was an examiner for the MBBS Examinations for the Madras University.

He started his Private Nursing Home in 1935 and then moved into his present location in 1938.He spent over 50 years in private practice which included several procedures which are done by specialist today. He was his own anaesthetist and continued to be so till he stopped operating in 1991.

He was the founder member of the Association of Surgeons in India which was founded in 1938.He was President of Madras Medical Council for three years and a member of the Senate of Madras University for six years. He was a Fellow of the International College of Surgeons. He was Chairman of the Cancer Institute. Adyar and also Chairman of the Association of Private Hospitals and Nursing Homes of Tamil Nadu.

Dr. B. M. Sundaravadanan married Mrs. Lakshmikanth in Bangalore on 26 Jan 1931. He had three sons and one daughter. He lived up to the age of 95yrs and breathed his last in 1995.

  • The Award was initiated for the Best Surgical Teacher which is to be given to a member of TNASI who has contributed to teaching in the field of Surgery.
